Since 2000, the world has spent about $10 trillion (bij ons 10 biljoen = 10 x 1 miljoen x 1 miljoen) on renewable energy, but hydrocarbons, like coal, natural gas, and oil, still provided 87% of world energy in 2024, according to the Energy Institute (Bron hier). in 1965, dus 60 jaar geleden, was dat nog bijna 100%.
In 2025 kwam super-goede-doelen-donateut Bill Gates tot de conclusie dat we ons geld beter kunnen besteden aan het bestrijden van armoede en ziekte in de wereld. Hij vindt klimaatverandering al 20 jaar een probleem, maar vindt nu dat andere problemen groter zijn.
"This is a remarkable change of position for Mr. Gates, who has spent billions in the fight against climate change over the last two decades. In 2021, he wrote a best-selling book titled How to Avoid a Climate Disaster".
87% fossiel
Het percentage fossiel zakt sinds 1965 dus heel langzaam, maar de absolute hoeveelheid fossiel-gegenereerde energie is in die 60 jaar verviervoudigd.
Wereldwijd is de bijdrage van zon en wind aan de opwekking van energie slechts miniem.
(NB: het zwarte deel is niet alleen fossiel, maar bevat ook kernenergie, waterkracht en andere energiebronnen )
Wind, solar, and other renewables failed to generate enough new energy to provide for the global increase in consumption, let alone replace hydrocarbons.
Wie de media volgt en de opinies van westerse regeringen en politici, krijgt al gauw de indruk dat we flink bezig zijn met een energietransitie, gedragen door voornamelijk zonne- en windenergie.
Kenmerkend is een opmerking van John Kerry:
last year, former US Secretary of State John Kerry said, “There shouldn’t be any more coal-fired power plants permitted anywhere in the world.”
Het lijkt er op dat de westerse wereld (behalve sinds 2025 de regering Trump) oog in oog staat met een fata morgana: we zien een energietransitie die er niet is, althans niet in een relevante mate: zonne- en windenergie groeien qua omvang minder dan de jaarlijks toename in energievraag en-produktie.
Het Energy Institute schrijft er het volgende over (bron hier):
"Global coal consumption continues to rise. Today, more than 6,500 coal-fired power plants operate across the world, and another thousand are in planning or under construction.
In 2024, coal provided 34% of the world’s electricity, the largest source of power.
(NB: in westerse landen zoals b.v. Nederland betreft electrische energie slechts ca. 20% van de totale energieconsumptie. En daarvan gebruikt de industrie nog het grootste deel).
Global energy consumption will continue to rise. The US has about 80 vehicles for every 100 people, but vehicle usage in Africa and India remains below 10 vehicles for every 100 people.
Today, developed nations use up to 20 times as much plastic as poor nations on a per-person basis. Developing nations will continue to use more hydrocarbon fuels to enable their economies to grow.
Almost 700 million people do not have access to electricity, and another two billion have blackouts or brownouts every other day. Over two billion people do not have access to clean water. Millions die each year from malaria, typhoid, and other diseases.
World leaders should concentrate on these real problems, instead of unfounded concerns about carbon dioxide emissions.
From the political scene to the continued growth of hydrocarbon energy, the global climate consensus, and the push for net zero, are crumbling. It’s time for nations to return to sensible energy policy."

In een commentaaar op het bovenstaande schreef David Lewis:
Currently there is a big push at COP 30 for a road map to end the use of fossil fuels. The plan is to substitute wind and solar power. I will restate information that has appeared on this site as to why this isn’t possible. The wind doesn’t always blow and the sun doesn’t always shine so there are times when wind and solar power are not available. The cost of batteries to provide power is prohibitively expensive and even if cost wasn’t an issue there are not enough rare earth minerals for the capacity that would be required. The push to eliminate fossil fuels calls for an action that is impossible both financially and technically. This shows just how poorly informed the negotiators are.
