Samenvatting
Wie zich zorgen maakt over een stijgende zeespiegel, zo schrijft Salomon Kroonenberg in ‘Spiegelzee’, vergeet dat de mensheid zoiets al eerder heeft meegemaakt. Zo’n 120.000 jaar geleden stond de zeespiegel zes meter hoger dan nu, en lag Amersfoort aan zee. In het koudste deel van de laatste ijstijd, 20.000 jaar geleden, stond hij juist 120 meter lager, en lag de Noordzee droog. De stijging die door het afsmelten van de ijskappen daar weer op volgde ging soms wel twintig keer zo snel als nu. Onze voorouders hebben onvoorstelbare zeespiegelveranderingen meegemaakt, die grote gevolgen voor hun leefmilieu hadden. Kroonenberg vertelt op toegankelijke wijze welke oorzaken daaraan ten grondslag liggen en hoe we dat te weten zijn gekomen. De laatste zesduizend jaar is onze zeespiegel redelijk stabiel, en wereldwijde peilschaalmetingen van de laatste eeuw laten nog geen versnelling zien. Wie inziet hoe inventief onze voorouders zich met weinig middelen aan zeespiegelveranderingen aanpasten, hoeft niet bang te zijn dat wij dat in de toekomst niet ook zelf zouden kunnen. |

Hij ergert zich aan het klimaatdebat, dat volgens hem niet open, eerlijk en rationeel wordt gevoerd en waarin autoriteiten als het IPCC van de VN en het KNMI plus groepen als Green Peace elk critisch geluid negeren of belachelijk maken. Hij begint zijn boek met een stelling van Thomas Huxley: "autoriteiten, discipelen en scholen zijn de vloek van de wetenschap". Rörsch hoopt dat de crisis in de wetenschap kan worden opgelost door het altijd maar weer stellen van drie cruciale vragen. Hoe weten we iets ? Waarom geloven we het ? Waar is het bewijs ? In een interview in de Telegraaf van 13-12-2009 noemt hij Klimatologie een zieke wetenschap.

As alarmists clamor to impose draconian government restrictions on entire populations in order to combat “climate change,” this book reveals some other startling, stubborn contradictory facts, including:
- CO2 has not caused temperatures or sea levels to rise beyond historical rates.
- Severe storms have not increased in frequency or intensity since 1970—neither have heat waves nor droughts.
- Global “climate change” is not harming coral reefs.
- Any increases in CO2 concentrations across huge time spans haven’t preceded rising global temperatures, they’ve followed them by about 600 to 800 years—just the opposite of alarmist claims.
- “Carbon” taxes and other “solutions” to the global warming “crisis” would have severe consequences for economically disadvantaged groups and nations.
- Alarmist climate scientists have hidden their raw temperature data and deleted emails—then undermined the peer-review system to squelch debate.
In sum, despite all the hot talk—and outright duplicity—there is no “climate crisis” resulting from human activities and no such threat on the horizon.
